Many people experience acne. While it is especially stubborn and difficult to treat, scarring is an unfortunate after-effect of this dreaded skin condition. Fortunately, there are available skin medications to use against pimples and acne.

Controlling and eliminating acne can be easily done using topical products that contain benzoyl peroxide. The downside of it, however, is that it is a skin irritant, which could do more harm than good. Peroxide can damage skin tissues; that's why it would be best to talk to your dermatologist first before using it.

As a substitute, dermatologists favor the use of tretinoin for its skin-peeling effect, which is generally available in gels, creams and lotions. This dermabrasive substance attacks the pimple first before it clears and peels the skin. Continuous use for about a month can produce wonderful results. However, the tretinoin treatment is generally prescribed by a dermatologist and should not be extended beyond the prescribed period. Expected side effects of tretinoin may include pigment changes, stinging or swelling of the skin.

Adapalene gel is also commonly used in acne control by clearing the skin pores. However, it is available only through a doctor's prescription, and its use is closely monitored and regulated. Usual side effects may include itchiness and dryness of skin.

Alternatively, cosmetics can act as a camouflage to hide the pimple outbreak. This is a temporary solution to conceal acne or its scars. But oil-based compounds tend to aggravate the pimples. Accordingly, alcohol-based and water-based cosmetics are preferred.
