Acne is a major problem for many people. Imagine attending high school with a big zit on your face. Wouldn't that be a drag? How about prepping yourself for an important job interview only to find a large pimple on top of your nose. Wouldn't that diminish your confidence? Or let's just say you've been eyeing that pretty girl next door and you're building the courage to speak to her, only to be crumbled by an unsightly acne breakout.

Yes, we have our moments. Acne is a major letdown. But to defeat this unwanted skin condition, you need to understand how and why acne happens.

Our skin produces oil, which flows through its tiny pores. Hormonal changes in the body, mostly occurring during puberty or pregnancy, push the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. The excessive oil production is likely to cause acne once the skin pores are blocked. Moreover, dust, dirt and other foreign particles could lead to sebum accumulation, which will also cause acne breakout.

To avoid having pimples, it is important to maintain a clean face. Use mild soap when washing your face; do this at least twice a day. Do not scrub your face when washing since it could lead to skin irritation. Do a circular motion instead.

Oily foods tend to trigger acne breakouts. On the other hand, fruits and vegetables are highly recommended to maintain acne-free skin. Stick with foods rich in beta carotene and zinc. Lastly, keep hydrated by drinking at least 1.5 liters of water each day.
