Skin rashes can be very irritating and uncomfortable. Most of them are caused by allergy-inducing substances; others are due to viral infections while some are hereditary. However, these skin disorders are nothing but inflammation on localized areas of the body.

One of these skin problems is ichthyosis vulgaris — a  condition commonly known as the fish scale disease. This is generally an inherited skin problem where dead skin cells build up to form dry and thick “scales” on the skin. Most of these “scales” appear at birth but may disappear thereafter. However, there are cases where they reappear during the adult years. Ichthyosis vulgaris is generally mild. Since there is no cure for this condition, treatment is focused on controlling it.

Symptoms of the fish scale disease may vary, depending on the severity of the skin condition. These may range from dry, scaly skin to tile-like, polygon-shaped scales. Some conditions may display flaky scalp as well as deep cracks on the palms and soles. Most symptoms worsen during cold weather and tend to improve during warm weather.

Ichthyosis vulgaris can affect the skin's normal functions. In certain cases, this skin problem can cause interference during sweating, thereby inhibiting the body's natural cooling process. This condition may also lead to skin cracking, which increases the risk of infection.

There is no known cure for ichthyosis vulgaris. However, doctors prescribe certain medications to increase skin moisture and control the scaling. These treatments include prescription ointments and creams that contain alpha hydroxyl acids. Retinoids are also prescribed to reduce skin cell production.
