Pemphigus is a rare skin disorder that causes blisters on the skin and mucous membranes. This skin problem can happen to anyone but often strikes middle-aged or older people. Its variant, pemphigus vulgaris, is common among people from the Middle East or of Jewish descent. Its medication is similar to those used for treating severe burns.

Medical experts advise its immediate treatment if the skin disorder is accompanied by fever, chills or muscle and joint aches. Furthermore, people with pemphigus may experience blisters that burst easily and leave open sores. If these blisters develop inside the mouth or there is a rapid outbreak of new sores, seek medical assistance as soon as possible.

Pemphigus vulgaris is characterized by mouth blisters that erupt on the skin; they can also appear on the genitals. These blisters are not itchy; rather, they are very painful. For instance, throat or mouth blisters make it hard to eat, chew or swallow food.

Pemphigus foliaceus is another variant of this skin disorder that usually erupts on the face and scalp and spreads toward the chest and back. They are not painful but tend to be itchy and crusty.

Paraneoplastic pemphigus is associated with various types of cancer. This skin condition causes painful sores in the mouth, lips or throat. In addition, there are instances where this lesion grows and develops in the lungs, which can result to progressive lung disease.

Mild pemphigus can be treated with corticosteroids, immunosuppressants and antibiotics. In severe cases, treatment may involve intravenous feeding, anesthetics and plasmapheresis.
