Eczema is a condition characterized by an itchy inflammation, coupled with redness and dryness of the skin. This chronic skin problem may also be accompanied by hay fever and asthma and often strikes during childhood but may continue beyond adolescence. Moreover, eczema is also known to subside temporarily and flare up from time to time.

This chronic skin problem is also known as atopic dermatitis. It usually appears on the arms and behind the knees. Its cause is unknown, but medical experts attribute it to an allergic reaction to environmental factors such as dust, extreme weather conditions, certain foods, and other irritants. Stress and genetics also play a huge factor in eczema.

Eczema displays several symptoms, which include the following:

  • Red bumps or blisters filled with fluid
  • Red or brownish gray rashes
  • Scaly or thickened skin due to continuous scratching
  • Severe itching

Presently, medical experts have yet to find a cure for eczema. To alleviate the redness, itching and inflammation, doctors recommend the use of antihistamines and corticosteroid ointments and creams. To prevent future eczema flare-ups, immunomodulators are also prescribed. Phototherapy is also used to control the symptoms. Moreover, it is equally important to identify and avoid eczema triggers.

Dryness increases the severity of the symptoms, especially the itchiness. Accordingly, people with eczema should stay away from harsh soaps that tend to dry out the skin. As much as possible, avoid long showers, and apply skin moisturizers, creams and lotions to lubricate the skin.
